Sod Mage Talents for Season of Discovery
Mage talent builds for Season of Discovery: Fire, Frost and Arcane DPS, rune healing, AoE levelling and PvP, each opened in the calculator with runes.
Season of Discovery Mage Talent Builds
Your sod mage talents build in Season of Discovery depends on one thing: which rune you equip. Runes break the Classic era talent trees, enabling healer Mages, AoE leveling specs that work, and Fire builds that can actually raid. You get 51 talent points at level 60 (one per level from 10 to 60). The three talent trees are Arcane, Fire, and Frost, each with a 31-point capstone. The most common mistake is importing a Classic Era or TBC build without checking your rune slots first. Five builds cover SoD: leveling, DPS, healing, PvP, and AoE farming.
The Three Trees in SoD
SoD uses the same three talent trees as Classic Era Arcane, Fire, and Frost but runes make each tree behave differently than it did in original WoW. Arcane is the support tree: it gives you Clearcasting, Presence of Mind, and Arcane Power. Fire is your burst damage tree with Ignite, Pyroblast, and Combustion. Frost is control and survivability with Frostbite (15% proc chance on chill effects, 4-second freeze at rank 5, 40% slow), Improved Blizzard, and Ice Block.
The key difference from Classic Era is that runes let you run a 31-point Frost build and still deal competitive damage because runes like Living Bomb and Fingers of Frost patch the gaps that made Frost a PvP-only tree in original Classic. Never assume a tree is useless just because it was weak in 2019 Wowhead guides.
Levelling and AoE Build
Frost AoE Leveling Build
For sod mage aoe leveling, put 31 points into Frost, then 20 into Arcane. Frost gives you Improved Blizzard (slows targets while you channel) and Ice Barrier. Arcane gives you Clearcasting and Presence of Mind. The rune that makes this work is Living Bomb, which causes your Fire Blast to explode after 4 seconds for AoE damage. Chain pull with Blizzard, wait for Living Bomb to pop, then Arcane Explosion. Pull 6 to 8 mobs at once; fewer than 5 is inefficient.
Dual Spec at 40
At level 40 you get Dual Spec for 50 gold. If you level as Frost AoE, save your gold for Dual Spec at 40 so you can swap to a single-target build for dungeons. Without it, respec costs ramp to 50 gold after about 10 respecs. The respec cost cap in SoD is 50 gold, not the 5 gold cap from Classic Era. If you plan to swap builds more than twice per week, Dual Spec is cheaper than repeated respecs.
DPS Builds: Fire and Frost
Fire DPS
For sod fire mage talents, go 31 points in Fire, 20 in Arcane. Pick every Fire node that increases critical strike chance and damage: Critical Mass, Fire Power, Ignite, Combustion. Capstone is Combustion (10-second cooldown, 100% crit on next fire spell). Runes you need are Living Bomb on your chest slot and Fingers of Frost on your hands slot. Living Bomb turns Fire Blast into an AoE proc that scales with your spell damage; Fingers of Frost makes your Frost spells deal more damage to frozen targets. Rotation: Living Bomb on the target, Combustion, then Scorch or Fire Blast until the bomb explodes.
Frost DPS
For sod frost mage talents, put 31 in Frost, 20 in Arcane. Frost gets Improved Blizzard, Frostbite (5 points for the 4-second freeze), and Ice Block. Runes are Fingers of Frost and Spellfrost, which converts some of your frost damage to arcane damage so it bypasses frost immunity. This is the best build for dungeons where adds resist frost. You give up the burst of Fire for consistent control and survivability. If your raid group has two mages, one should run Fire and one Frost; if only one mage, Fire performs better on most Phase 8 boss fights.
| Build | Talent Tree | Primary Rune | Secondary Rune | Level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leveling AoE | 31 Frost / 20 Arcane | Living Bomb (Chest) | Arcane Explosion (Hands) | 25+ |
| Fire DPS | 31 Fire / 20 Arcane | Living Bomb (Chest) | Fingers of Frost (Hands) | 40+ |
| Frost DPS | 31 Frost / 20 Arcane | Fingers of Frost (Hands) | Spellfrost (Shoulders) | 40+ |
| Healing | 31 Arcane / 20 Frost | Regeneration (Chest) | Arcane Blast (Hands) | 50+ |
| PvP | 31 Frost / 20 Arcane | Fingers of Frost (Hands) | Living Bomb (Chest) | 40+ |
Healing Build: Rune-Enabled Mage Healer
Runes and Talents
For sod healing mage, you need the Regeneration rune on your chest slot. This rune replaces your Arcane Intellect with a heal-over-time spell that scales with your spell damage. Put 31 points into Arcane (Arcane Power, Presence of Mind, Arcane Blast) then 20 into Frost for survivability. You are not a priest: your healing is slow and group-wide, not single-target burst. You heal by casting Arcane spells while Regeneration ticks on your party.
Key runes beyond Regeneration: Arcane Blast on hands replaces Arcane Missiles, dealing damage and healing you at the same time. This build works best in 5-man dungeons where your group has a dedicated tank healer and you top off damage on the raid. Do not take this build into a raid as the only healer. The Phase 8 maintenance mode means no further tuning is coming; what you see is what you get.
If you are looking at sod talent system or comparing sod talent builds pve vs pvp, note that the healing build is strictly PvE. For PvP you want Frost, covered next.
PvP Build
Frost PvP Build
For sod mage build in PvP, go 31 Frost / 20 Arcane. Max Frostbite (5 points, 4-second freeze), Ice Barrier, and Ice Block. These talents give you control and survive burst. Runes: Fingers of Frost (hands) makes your chill effects stick longer; Living Bomb (chest) gives you AoE pressure on flag caps and team fights. The PvP event Blood Moon in Stranglethorn Vale awards currency you can use to buy these runes if you have not found them elsewhere.
Your rotation in world PvP is Frost Nova, Blink, Living Bomb on the nearest target, then Arcane Explosion. If you are outnumbered, Ice Block and wait for cooldowns, then Frostbolt and run. The 50 gold respec cap means you can swap from your raid build to this PvP build if you do not own Dual Spec. But Dual Spec at level 40 costs 50 gold once and saves you the respec cost every time. For anyone PvPing more than once a week, Dual Spec pays for itself in a month.
Key Runes for Mage
Rune Slots and Build-Defining Runes
Seven rune slots exist: head, shoulders, chest, legs, hands, belt, feet. Every build uses at most five; the remaining slots are passive boosts or utility. The three runes that define mage builds are:
- Living Bomb, Chest slot. Makes Fire Blast explode after 4 seconds dealing AoE damage. Required for Fire DPS and AoE leveling.
- Fingers of Frost, Hands slot. Increases damage of frost spells against frozen targets. Required for Frost DPS and PvP.
- Regeneration, Chest slot. Replaces Arcane Intellect with a heal-over-time. Required for healing mage.
Other runes like Spellfrost (shoulders, converts frost damage to arcane) and Arcane Blast (hands, replaces Arcane Missiles) are build-specific but not mandatory. You can swap any rune for free at a Rune Engraver in major cities. There is no cost to swap, unlike respecs which cost gold. The only cost is travel time to the Engraver.
For the most complete rune list, cross-check Wowhead SoD Mage guides. Blizzard SoD patch notes (Phase 8 patch 1.15.4, released 2025-01-28) confirmed the final rune sets. No new runes will be added; SoD entered maintenance mode on 2025-06-19 per the Blizzard blue post of that date.
Common Questions
How many talent points do I have at level 60 in SoD?
51 points. Formula is level minus 9. You get your first point at level 10, then one per level to 60.
Can I use a Classic Era talent calculator for SoD mage builds?
Yes, for the tree structure. But it will not show rune slots or rune effects, and runes are what make a build viable in SoD.
What is the max respec cost in SoD?
50 gold. It starts at 10 silver and ramps up over about 10 respecs. The cap is 50 gold, not the 5 gold cap from Classic Era.
Is the healing mage build viable for raids?
Only as a secondary healer. The Regeneration rune heal-over-time cannot replace a dedicated healer. Use it in 5-man dungeons.
Where do I get the Living Bomb rune?
Living Bomb is from a quest chain in the Barrens (Horde) or Duskwood (Alliance) at level 25+. Check Wowhead SoD mage guides for the exact quest start NPC.
