Sod Priest Talents for Every Build
Priest talent builds for Season of Discovery: Holy and Discipline healing, Shadow DPS and levelling, each linked into the calculator with its runes.
Season of Discovery Priest Talents: The Core Fact
At level 60, a Priest has exactly 51 talent points to spend, calculated by the level-minus-nine formula. That is the single most useful fact because it is where every SoD priest build starts. The three trees, Discipline, Holy, and Shadow, are the same Classic Era trees from original WoW, but Runes change everything. SoD priest talents are not Classic Era priest talents with a new coat of paint; Runes enable specs that were unviable in 2004, and no further balance patches will arrive after Phase 8. If you are returning to SoD after a break, or building an alt, the talent point count and the Rune interaction are what you need to verify before committing to a build.
The Three Trees in SoD
Discipline, Holy, and Shadow are the three specialization trees for the Priest class in Season of Discovery. Each tree has a 31-point capstone talent. Discipline offers mana efficiency, damage mitigation, and utility like Power Word: Shield improvements. Holy provides the core healing toolkit, including talents like Inspiration and Divine Favor. Shadow focuses on damage output through Shadowform and talents like Shadow Weaving.
The critical distinction from Classic Era is that Runes let you mix roles. A Holy Priest with a Void Plague Rune gains self-healing from damage, which changes how you approach solo content. A Shadow Priest with a Penance Rune gets a channeled Holy damage spell that is not in the original talent tree. The talent trees themselves are unchanged, but the Rune system makes them behave differently.
SoD Priest Leveling Build
What to Prioritize
For leveling, the fastest path is a Shadow build with specific Runes. Put 5 points in Spirit Tap first, then 5 in Improved Shadow Word: Pain. Follow with Shadow Focus to reduce miss chance, then Mind Flay and reach Shadowform by level 40. From 40 to 60, fill out Darkness and Shadow Weaving for consistent damage.
Runes That Matter
Equip Void Plague on your head slot as soon as you can get it, it replaces Shadow Word: Pain and heals you for 50% of the damage dealt. Use Mind Sear on your chest for an AoE channel that speeds up groups of mobs. Homunculi on your shoulders provides a pet that tanks one enemy, which reduces downtime. Avoid gear sockets that require level 50 for key Runes; you want these at level 25 and 40.
Common Mistake
New SoD players often try a Holy build while leveling and struggle with mana and kill speed. The failure case is running out of mana mid-fight and having no damage. A Shadow build with Void Plague and Mind Sear solves that. You can Dual Spec at level 40 for 50 gold and switch to a healing build for dungeons, which saves you the respec cost ramp.
SoD Healing Priest Build
Holy Is the Standard
For group healing in SoD, a Holy build is the most reliable. Spend 31 points in Holy to reach Divine Favor, Holy Concentration, and Holy Nova. Put the remaining 20 points in Discipline for Mental Agility, Improved Power Word: Shield, and Force of Will. This gives you the throughput for raid healing and the mana efficiency for long fights.
Rune Pairings for Healing
Penance on your chest slot is essential, it is a channeled Holy spell that heals a target over three seconds. Prayer of Mending on your legs bounces a heal to the lowest-health party member. Circle of Healing on your head provides a smart AoE heal on a 15-second cooldown. Lightwell on your hands creates a clickable heal on the ground. These four Runes turn a standard Holy Priest into a competitive healer for Phase 8 content.
When Holy Is Not the Answer
If you need to heal in PvP or small groups, a Discipline build with 31 points in Discipline and 20 in Holy works better. The Rune choices stay the same, but you gain Power Word: Barrier for damage reduction and Body and Soul for speed boosts. For raid healing, Holy outperforms Discipline because of the capstone talents. The respec cost cap of 50 gold makes it expensive to swap daily, so lock in your primary role and use Dual Spec for the alternative.
SoD Shadow Priest Talents
Pure Shadow Build
A pure Shadow build puts 31 points in Shadow to reach Shadowform and Darkness. The remaining 20 points go into Discipline for Wand Specialization, Improved Power Word: Shield, and Martyrdom. This is the standard for PvE damage in dungeons and raids. You lose the utility of Holy, but your damage scales with Shadow Weaving and Shadowform's 15% damage buff.
Hybrid Shadow Build
You can take 28 points in Shadow and 23 in Discipline to get Power Word: Shield improvements and Meditation for mana efficiency. This hybrid costs you Shadowform and Darkness, so it is only viable if you also Rune into Shadowform through the Shadowform Rune on your head slot. Check Wowhead SoD Priest guides for the exact Rune interaction, because the Rune overrides the talent requirement.
Runes That Enable Shadow
Void Plague replaces Shadow Word: Pain and heals you. Shadow Word: Death on your chest is a high-damage execute. Vampiric Embrace on your hands gives the party 15% healing from your Shadow damage. Dispersion on your head clears all magic effects. These Runes make Shadow Priest a viable DPS spec, which it was not in Classic Era. The common failure case is ignoring Void Plague and running out of health between pulls; always have it equipped.

Key Runes for Priest in SoD
Void Plague
Void Plague replaces Shadow Word: Pain. It deals Shadow damage over 18 seconds and restores the Priest for 50% of that damage. It is available from level 25 and is the single most important Rune for leveling and solo play. Get it first from a quest in Duskwood or a drop in Blackfathom Deeps.
Penance
Penance is a channeled spell that fires Holy bolts at an enemy or ally. It is available from level 40 and is essential for both healing and Shadow builds. For healers, it provides a steady heal over 3 seconds. For Shadow Priests, it is a Holy damage source that works even while in Shadowform.
Mind Sear
Mind Sear is a channeled AoE Shadow spell that hits all enemies in a cone. It is available from level 50 and is key for leveling after that point. It also works in Shadowform, making it a good dungeon AoE tool for Shadow Priests.
Prayer of Mending
Prayer of Mending is a smart heal that bounces to the lowest-health party member. It is available from level 40 and is a core rune for any healing build. It does not require a talent tree investment, so it is equally effective in Holy and Discipline builds.
Dispersion
Dispersion clears all magic effects from the Priest and silences nearby enemies. It is available from level 50 and is a PvP and survivability Rune. It is especially useful for Shadow Priests who lack crowd control.
Common Questions
How many talent points do I have at level 60 in SoD?
51 points. The formula is character level minus 9. You get your first point at level 10, then one per level up to 60.
Can I use a Classic Era talent calculator for SoD?
Yes, for the tree structure. The talent trees are identical. But you will miss Rune interactions, which are critical for build viability in SoD.
What is the fastest way to level a Priest in SoD?
Shadow build with Void Plague Rune. Put 31 points in Shadow, 20 in Discipline. Use Homunculi and Mind Sear Runes. Avoid Holy until level 60.
Are Shadow Priests viable in SoD raids?
Yes, with the right Runes. Void Plague, Shadow Word: Death, and Vampiric Embrace bring competitive damage and party utility. The spec was not viable in Classic Era but is in SoD.
