Best Sod Shaman Talents for Leveling

Shaman talent builds for Season of Discovery: Elemental and Enhancement DPS, rune-based tanking, Restoration healing and levelling, ready to share.

Season of Discovery Shaman Talent Builds

The most common mistake players make with sod shaman talents is assuming they work like Classic Era or TBC builds. They don't. Season of Discovery (SoD) uses the same Classic Era talent tree structure, but Runes fundamentally change what is viable. A build that worked for a level 60 Restoration Shaman in 2019 is likely missing the Rune interactions that make SoD specs function at all. This covers final Phase 8 talent states and Rune pairings for Elemental, Enhancement, and Restoration Shamans. All numbers below use the level-9 formula: 51 talent points at level 60, earned one per level from 10 onward.

The Three Trees In SoD

Shaman has three talent trees in SoD: Elemental (ranged spell damage), Enhancement (melee damage, and the only viable tanking tree), and Restoration (healing). Each tree has a 31-point capstone talent. Because Runes are slotted into gear (head, shoulders, chest, legs, hands, belt, feet) and are free to swap at a Rune Engraver, your talent build and Rune loadout are two separate decisions you pair together. No Rune costs talent points. The Phase 8 trees are identical to Classic Era trees in structure; what changed is the Rune set, which enables specs like tank Shaman that were not viable in original Classic.

Elemental Tree

Elemental caps at Lava Burst (instant cast, 4 sec cooldown, deals up to 50% of target's health if Flame Shock is active). Key supporting talents: Elemental Fury (critical strikes deal 100% extra damage) and Lightning Overload (up to 20% chance for a second bolt at half damage). You need 20 points in Elemental to reach Lava Burst, then you usually put remaining points in Restoration for mana efficiency or in Enhancement for melee backup.

Enhancement Tree

Enhancement caps at Shamanistic Rage (3 min cooldown, 15 sec duration, 25% increased melee damage and 30% damage reduction). The tree also includes Stormstrike (12 sec cooldown, two extra attacks, applies a 20% Nature damage taken debuff for 12 seconds) and Windfury Weapon (20% chance on hit for two extra attacks). Enhancement is the preferred tree for tank Shaman because of its durability talents: Toughness (up to 10% Stamina) and Shield Specialization (up to 5% block chance).

Restoration Tree

Restoration caps at Healing Way (3 min cooldown, 15 sec duration, 25% increased healing). Core throughput comes from Improved Healing Wave (up to 25% more healing) and Tidal Mastery (up to 10% increased critical strike chance for healing spells). Mana Tide Totem (5 min cooldown, restores 24 mana every 5 seconds to party) is a key raid utility. Restoration builds typically take 31 points in the tree to get Healing Way, then put points into Elemental for hit chance (Elemental Precision) or into Enhancement for mana reduction (Mental Quickness).

Levelling Build

A levelling Shaman wants fast kill speed and minimal downtime. The build below prioritises burst damage and mana efficiency through level 60.
Elemental: put 20 points to get Lava Burst (take Convection 5/5, Concussion 5/5, Elemental Devastation 1/1, Elemental Focus 1/1, Call of Thunder 5/5, Elemental Fury 1/1, Eye of the Storm 1/1, then 1 point in Storm Reach for range).
Restoration: after Lava Burst, put 31 points into Restoration for Healing Way, taking Improved Healing Wave 5/5, Tidal Focus 5/5, Ancestral Healing 5/5, Totemic Focus 2/2, Healing Grace 3/3, Tidal Mastery 5/5, Purification 2/2, Mana Tide Totem 1/1, Nature's Swiftness 1/1, Gift of the Earth 3/3, Improved Chain Heal 2/2, Healing Focus 5/5, Nature's Guardian 1/1, Healing Way 1/1.
Key Runes for levelling: Way of the Earth (turns Earth Shock into a 30-yard instant, enabling PvP burst and pulling), and any Rune that reduces downtime or increases survivability (e.g., a Rune that heals on kill). Swap Runes freely at a Rune Engraver, no cost. Levelling speed is fastest if you maintain one gear set with the highest Stamina and Intellect pieces you can find. Dual Spec is available from level 40 for a one-time cost of 50 gold; buy it once you have two distinct roles you want to switch between, such as questing (Elemental/Healing hybrid) and dungeon tanking (Enhancement). If you respecc repeatedly without Dual Spec, respec costs start at 10 silver and cap at 50 gold after several changes.

DPS Builds

Two DPS builds are viable for Shaman in Phase 8: Elemental caster and Enhancement melee. Neither is stronger in all situations; they have different gear demands and playstyles.

Elemental DPS

Put 31 points in Elemental (take Lava Burst, Lightning Overload 5/5, Shamanism 3/3, Elemental Shields 2/2, Chain Lightning 1/1, Elemental Oath 1/1, Lava Burst 1/1, Elemental Warding 2/2, Lightning Bolt 1/1). Then put 20 points into Restoration to pick up Nature's Swiftness and Healing Way for emergency self-heal or into Enhancement for Mental Quickness (up to 30% reduced mana cost on instant spells). Runes: equip Way of the Earth for instant Earth Shock burst, and any Rune that increases Nature or Fire damage. This build works best with high spell crit and spell hit gear. Elemental Precision (6% hit chance) must be taken if your gear does not cap hit.

Enhancement DPS

Put 31 points in Enhancement (take Stormstrike 1/1, Shamanistic Rage 1/1, Unleashed Rage 5/5, Weapon of the Elements 3/3, Mental Quickness 3/3, Elemental Expression 2/2, Windfury Weapon 1/1, Shamanistic Focus 1/1, Shamanistic Mastery 2/2, Elemental Fury 1/1, Shamanistic Rage 1/1). Then put 20 points into Elemental for hit chance (Elemental Precision 3/3) and damage (Convection 5/5, Concussion 5/5, Elemental Devastation 1/1, Elemental Focus 1/1). Runes: look for Runes that increase melee attack power or proc extra attacks. The Stormstrike debuff (20% increased Nature damage taken) is your group utility, keep it up. Failure case: if your hit chance is below 8% (including talents), you will miss white swings and lose significant DPS. Use Thundering Strikes 5/5 and Improved Weapons 2/2 from the Enhancement tree to reach cap.

Tank Build

SoD made Shaman tanking viable through Runes that add threat generation and survivability. The talent build is a hybrid of Enhancement and Restoration, with no points in Elemental. Put 31 points in Enhancement for Shamanistic Rage (the 30% damage reduction is your main defensive cooldown) and the Stamina talent Toughness 5/5 (+10% Stamina). Also take Shield Specialization 5/5 for block chance. Then put 20 points into Restoration for Earth Shield (up to 10% damage reduction) and Nature's Guardian (30% threat reduction on heals). Key talents: Shamanistic Rage (3 min cooldown, 30% damage reduction), Toughness (10% Stamina), Shield Specialization (5% block chance), and Parry (25% chance to parry). Runes: prioritise Runes that generate threat on hit and Runes that provide a taunt or interrupt. You need a shield equipped, block chance from Shield Specialization only functions with a shield. Respecc cost is 1 gold minimum, ramping to 50 gold cap; if you plan to tank dungeons part time, buy Dual Spec (50 gold once) and keep a tank build saved alongside your DPS or healing build. Do not attempt to tank with a 2-hander, losing shield block chance makes incoming physical damage spike unpredictably.

Healing Build

A Restoration Shaman healing build puts 31 points in Restoration for Healing Way, then puts 20 points into Elemental for hit chance (Elemental Precision 3/3) and damage reduction (Elemental Warding 2/2) or into Enhancement for mana cost reduction (Mental Quickness 3/3). The Restoration tree capstone Healing Way (3 min cooldown, 15 sec duration, 25% increased healing) is your burst healing cooldown. Before that, take Improved Healing Wave 5/5, Tidal Focus 5/5, Ancestral Healing 5/5, Totemic Focus 2/2, Healing Grace 3/3, Tidal Mastery 5/5, Purification 2/2, Mana Tide Totem 1/1, Nature's Swiftness 1/1, Gift of the Earth 3/3, Improved Chain Heal 2/2, Healing Focus 5/5, Nature's Guardian 1/1, Healing Way 1/1. Mana Tide Totem (24 mana every 5 seconds to party) is your main raid utility, place it on cooldown in a group that needs mana. Runes: equip any Rune that reduces mana cost of healing spells or adds a HoT effect. Chain Heal is your primary AoE heal; with Improved Chain Heal 2/2 it heals 20% more per bounce. Failure case: if you do not take Tidal Mastery (10% crit on heals), your effective healing output drops by roughly 8-10% because crit heals do not double in SoD, they add 50% to the heal amount. Still worth it for the spike potential.

Key Runes

Runes are slotted into gear slots (head, shoulders, chest, legs, hands, belt, feet) and are free to swap at any Rune Engraver. They do not cost talent points. The following Runes are critical for Shaman builds in Phase 8:

  • Way of the Earth: Turns Earth Shock into a 30-yard instant cast. Essential for Elemental PvP burst and for pulling mobs while levelling. Also useful in tank builds for snap threat.
  • Serpent Spread is a Hunter Rune, not Shaman, ignore it. There is no equivalent Shaman spread Rune.
  • Blood Moon event (Stranglethorn Vale world PvP) awards currency you can spend on Runes. Event duration is 3 hours per occurrence; exact schedule is unannounced. If you miss it, you can also get Runes from dungeon bosses (Gnomeregan, Blackfathom Deeps) and quest chains. Solo players may not have access to all Runes, some require group content.
  • Rune Engraving is the process of applying a Rune to a slot. Runes are not consumed; you can swap them out for free at any Rune Engraver in a major city. Do not waste gold paying for a Rune service that does not exist.
Rune level requirements: some Runes require level 25, 40, 50, or 60. Plan your build around what you can equip now, not what you will have at 60. A Rune that requires level 50 is worthless to a level 30 character.
