Sod Rogue Talents for Discovery
Rogue talent builds for Season of Discovery: dagger and sword DPS, tanking with runes, PvP and levelling, each opened in the calculator with its key runes.
Season of Discovery Rogue Talent Builds
At level 60, you have 51 talent points to spend. The formula is level minus 9, because your first point arrives at level 10, not level 1. Every SoD rogue build starts from that number. If you are planning points and end up with 52 allocated, you have used a Classic Era calculator that assumed you start at level 1. Respec your points first, check the total, then commit. The Rogue trees are Assassination, Combat, and Subtlety, and each has a 31-point capstone. SoD rogue talents follow the Classic Era tree structure exactly; no new talents were added in any phase. What changed is the Rune system, which modifies abilities and opens specs that were non-viable in original Classic. A build that worked in Phase 3 may be obsolete in Phase 8, not because talents shifted, but because later Runes changed the rotation.
SoD Rogue Talents: The Three Trees in Phase 8
Assassination
The left tree. Its 31-point capstone is Cold Blood, guaranteeing maximum damage on your next offensive combo point ability. Assassination builds stack hit rating and daggers, relying on poison application and burst finishers. This tree supports both the 31/0/20 split for PvE and a deeper investment in Subtlety for PvP.Combat
The middle tree. Its capstone is Blade Flurry, an Area of Effect attack that hits all targets within melee range for 10 seconds. Combat talents improve weapon skill with swords, fists, or maces, and give you extra combo points through Combat Potency. This is the tree that enables the SoD tank rogue, because Blade Flurry generates significant AoE threat when paired with the Riposte Rune.Subtlety
The right tree. Its capstone is Premeditation, which instantly generates two combo points on your target. Subtlety improves stealth, movement speed, and opener damage. The Shadowstep Rune (boots slot) is not a talent here; it is a Rune that teleports you behind your target and makes your next Backstab or Ambush free. Without Shadowstep, a Subtlety build loses its primary mobility tool. Do not copy a TBC Subtlety build expecting it to work in SoD.SoD Rogue Leveling Build
The fastest SoD rogue leveling build is Combat, going 0/31/20. Put your first 5 points into Assassination's Malice (5% crit chance) and then move into Combat for Deflection (parry chance) and Riposte (a parry-based counterattack). The Rune that makes leveling smooth is Victory Rush (head slot), which grants 20 energy on a killing blow. It works on mobs, not just players. Slot it at level 25 and your downtime between pulls disappears.
Key talents: 5 points in Lightning Reflexes for dodge, 2 points in Precision for hit chance, and then push toward Blade Flurry at 31. At level 40 you get Dual Spec for 50 gold. If you plan to raid at 60, buy Dual Spec at 40 and save your second build for a DPS spec. Do not wait until 60; the cost does not change and the convenience of swapping between a leveling build and a dungeon build is worth 50 gold.
SoD Rogue DPS Builds
Combat Swords (21/30/0)
The standard PvE damage build for sword users. 30 points in Combat get you Adrenaline Rush (extra energy on dodge) and near-permanent Blade Flurry uptime. The remaining 21 points in Assassination pick up Improved Slice and Dice and Lethality for crit damage. This build pairs with the Envenom Rune (legs slot), which lets you consume deadly poison stacks for a nature-damage finisher. Energy management is tight; you will use Sinister Strike as your main builder and Eviscerate as your finisher. Do not use Riposte in this build; it costs energy you need for Eviscerate.Assassination Daggers (31/0/20)
Higher burst, lower sustained damage. 31 points in Assassination get Cold Blood and Vile Poisons. 20 points in Subtlety give you Master of Deception (faster stealth) and Opportunity (increased Ambush damage). The Shadowstep Rune is mandatory here; use it to teleport behind a target, then Ambush for a free opener. The weakness is AoE; this build clears packs slowly. Use it for single-target fights where the boss dies in under 60 seconds.SoD Tank Rogue Build (Rune-Enabled)
The SoD tank rogue is a real spec in Phase 8, enabled entirely by Runes. Your talent build is 21/30/0 (same as the Combat DPS build), but the Rune selection changes everything. The key Rune is Riposte (chest slot), which makes your parry generate a debuff that reduces the target's attack power by 15%. Stack that with Blade Flurry for AoE threat and Evasion for survivability. Slot Shadowstep (boots slot) to reposition mid-fight if you lose aggro.
You cannot tank without the Main Gauche Rune (legs slot), which lets you dual-wield a sword in your off-hand as a tanking weapon with increased parry rating. Without it, your avoidance is too low. The Redirect Rune (waist slot) transfers all threat from a party member to yourself for 10 seconds on a 30-second cooldown. Use Redirect as your snap-aggro button. A tank rogue has no taunt; you rely on damage output and Redirect to hold threat. Expect to be squishier than a Warrior tank; you are trading armor for higher avoidance.
| Build | Primary Tree | Key Runes | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 31/0/20 | Assassination | Envenom (Legs), Shadowstep (Boots) | Burst DPS, single-target bosses |
| 21/30/0 | Combat | Riposte (Chest), Blade Flurry (No rune needed), Main Gauche (Legs for tank) | Sustained DPS, AoE, tanking |
| 0/20/31 | Subtlety | Shadowstep (Boots), Premeditation (No rune needed) | PvP opener, solo stealth |
| Leveling (0/31/20) | Combat | Victory Rush (Head), Riposte (Chest) | Fast leveling, low downtime |
SoD Rogue PvP Build
The strongest SoD rogue pvp build in Phase 8 is the Subtlety opener build, 0/20/31. 31 points in Subtlety give you Premeditation and Master of Deception. The remaining 20 points in Assassination give Lethality and Improved Ambush. The core combo is: start stealthed, use Premeditation to generate two combo points, use Shadowstep to teleport behind the target, then Ambush (free energy due to Shadowstep), followed by a 5-point Eviscerate before the target can react.
This build struggles against plate-wearing classes with high armor. Against a Warrior with Victory Rush, your opener may not do enough damage to finish them before they pop Shield Wall. Against cloth casters, the burst is lethal. The Blood Moon event gives you the currency to buy the Shadowstep Rune if you missed it; do not skip the event. For world PvP, keep Evasion on a cooldown macro and use Blind to interrupt casts. The build has no sustain; if the opener fails, vanish and reset.
Key Runes for Every Rogue
You have 12 Rune slots (Head, Neck, Shoulders, Back, Chest, Wrist, Hands, Waist, Legs, Feet, Ring1, Ring2). All Runes are free to swap at any Rune Engraver in a major city; there is no cost to experiment. The most important Rune across all builds is Shadowstep (boots slot). It is not a talent. Players coming from TBC often try to find it in the Subtlety tree; it is not there. Shadowstep is acquired from a quest chain in Stranglethorn Vale starting at level 40.
For DPS builds, the Envenom Rune (legs slot) is your primary damage finisher. For tank build, Main Gauche (legs slot) is mandatory. For leveling, Victory Rush (head slot) saves you energy and time. The Riposte Rune (chest slot) is used in both tank and Combat DPS builds but for different reasons: tank uses it for the debuff, DPS uses it for the energy return on dodge. Check the table above for exact pairings.
Respec Costs and Dual Spec
Respeccing costs gold. The first respec is 10 silver, then it climbs: 1 gold, then 5 gold, then increments up to a 50 gold cap after roughly 10 respecs. Unlike Classic Era (which caps at 5 gold), SoD respecs can cost ten times as much if you change builds frequently. Bypass this by buying Dual Spec at level 40 for a one-time 50 gold fee. Dual Spec lets you save two talent builds and swap between them out of combat with a 5-second cast. It does not share cooldowns between specs; you can swap from a tank build to a PvP build instantly. The 50 gold is not refundable; choose your two builds carefully before you buy.
Who This Build Guide Serves and Who Should Skip It
This content suits a returning SoD player who last played in Phase 3 and needs the Phase 8 state of Runes and talent trees. It suits an alt-leveler planning a Rune setup for a new Rogue. It suits a theorycrafter checking hybrid builds against pure specs, using the 51-point formula to verify allocations. It suits a player who distrusts third-party build sites and wants to verify talent point counts manually.
Skip this if you are looking for retail WoW talent systems, TBC or Wrath talent calculators, or guides for Classic Era servers that do not include Runes. Skip if you need current meta rankings or DPS simulations; those change with community opinion and are not covered here. The most common failure is assuming a Classic Era build works in SoD without Runes. It does not. Verify your Rune slots and talent points separately before you spend gold on a respec.
Common Questions
How many talent points do I have at level 60?
51 points. Formula is level minus 9: your first point at level 10, then one per level to 60. If a calculator shows 52 points, it is a Classic Era tool, not an SoD tool.
Can I use a Classic Era talent calculator for SoD?
Yes for the tree structure, but it will not show Runes. Runes modify abilities and enable specs like tank Rogue. Use a calculator that includes Rune slots or cross-reference with a Rune list.
What is the maximum respec cost?
50 gold. It ramps up from 10 silver after repeated respecs. Respec cost decays by 5 gold per week down to a floor of 10 gold. Buy Dual Spec at level 40 to avoid frequent respecs.
Is Shadowstep a talent or a Rune?
It is a Rune in the boots slot. There is no Shadowstep talent in Classic Era Rogue trees. It is acquired from a quest chain in Stranglethorn Vale starting at level 40.
