Sod Warlock Talents for Season of Discovery
Warlock talent builds for Season of Discovery: Affliction, Destruction and Demonology DPS, rune-based tanking and levelling, linked into the calculator.
Season of Discovery Warlock Talent Builds
Your sod warlock talents depend on one decision: are you leveling, dealing damage, or tanking? Each path uses a different tree and a different set of Runes. At level 60 you have 51 talent points to spend across Affliction, Demonology and Destruction. Runes add new abilities and modify existing ones, and they are separate from the talent tree. The most common mistake is copying a Classic Era build and ignoring how Runes change which talents are worth taking. This gives you the build for each role, the Rune pairing it needs, and the failure cases to avoid.
The Three Trees in SoD
Affliction is your damage-over-time tree. Its capstone, Haunt, increases Shadow damage taken by the target by 15% for 5 minutes. Affliction builds rely on Corruption, Siphon Life, Unstable Affliction, and the Rune Chaos Bolt to fill gaps between casts. Demonology focuses on your demon pet. The capstone is Felguard, which summons a permanent demon tank. This tree pairs with the Meta Rune to enable tanking. Destruction is the direct damage tree. Its 31-point talent is not listed in the research, but the tree leans on Shadow Bolt, Immolate and crit talents. Destruction builds are the simplest to play and the most gear-dependent.
Sod Warlock Leveling Build
Best Leveling Tree: Affliction
Put your first 16 points into Affliction. Start with 5/5 Improved Corruption, then 2/5 Suppression, then 5/5 Shadow Mastery, and finish with 2/2 Grim Reach and 2/2 Improved Siphon Life. At level 26 you have Corruption, Siphon Life, and enough range to pull safely. After level 40, move into Demonology for Demonic Embrace (5/5) and Fel Stamina (3/3) to boost your survivability. At level 60 the split is 31/20/0.
Rune Setup for Leveling
Equip Chaos Bolt in your hands slot as soon as you can (level 40). It gives you an instant Shadow bolt on a 6-second cooldown, which fills the gap while Corruption ticks. Use Demonic Grace in your legs slot to reduce the cooldown on your demon summon. For the chest slot, use Summon Succubus to get a crowd control pet. Avoid Meta until you are ready to tank; it reduces your damage output while leveling.
What Goes Wrong
New players try to level as Destruction because it looks flashy. Destruction needs gear and hit rating to compete with Affliction's uptime. If you are dying to two mobs, you are missing Fel Stamina and Demonic Embrace. Respec is cheap early (first respec costs 10 silver), so fix it before level 30.
Sod Affliction Warlock Build (DPS)
Build Link
31/0/20 is the standard Affliction DPS build. Spend 31 points in Affliction to reach Haunt. Key picks: 5/5 Improved Corruption, 5/5 Shadow Mastery, 5/5 Malediction, 5/5 Pandemic, 1/1 Haunt. Then put 20 points in Destruction for 5/5 Bane, 5/5 Devastation, and 5/5 Improved Immolate. Skip Ruin in this build because your damage is DoT-based, not crit-based.
Rune Pairing
Slot Chaos Bolt (hands). Your rotation has downtime between DoT refreshes without it. Use Summon Succubus (chest) for the Seduction debuff, which increases magic damage taken by the target. For legs, use Demonic Grace to keep your Succubus alive through AoE. For shoulders, use Mark of Chaos to buff your Chaos Bolt. This setup delivers steady damage on long fights and strong cleave on multi-target pulls.
Failure Case
Do not take Dark Pact unless a healer watches you. It sacrifices 20% of your current health for a 20% Shadow damage buff. In a 5-man dungeon, that self-damage can kill you. Save it for raid where you have healers.
| Build | Talent Split | Key Runes | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leveling (Affliction) | 31/20/0 | Chaos Bolt, Demonic Grace, Summon Succubus | Solo questing |
| Affliction DPS | 31/0/20 | Chaos Bolt, Summon Succubus, Demonic Grace, Mark of Chaos | Raid DPS |
| Destruction DPS | 2/0/49 | Chaos Bolt, Incinerate, Decimation, Summon Succubus | Raid DPS |
| Tank (Demonology) | 0/51/0 | Meta, Demonic Frenzy, Demonic Knowledge, Summon Felguard | Dungeon/Raid tank |
Sod Warlock Build for Destruction DPS
Build Link
Destruction builds use a 2/0/49 split. Put 2 points in Affliction for Improved Corruption and the rest in Destruction. Key picks: 5/5 Bane, 5/5 Improved Immolate, 5/5 Devastation, 1/1 Ruin, 5/5 Intensity, 1/1 Pyroclasm. You skip Affliction entirely because your damage comes from Shadow Bolt and Immolate crits. This build is gear-dependent: you need at least 8% hit rating from talents and gear to avoid resists.
Rune Pairing
Use Incinerate (hands) to convert Shadow Bolt into a fire spell that scales with fire spell damage. Slot Decimation (legs) to increase the critical strike damage of your spells. For chest, use Summon Succubus for the magic damage debuff. For shoulders, use Backdraft to increase Fire damage taken by the target. This build produces the highest single-target burst in the game, but it has no sustain on long fights.
What Goes Wrong
Destruction runs out of mana in under 90 seconds. You need a healer with mana regeneration or a Rogue using Innervate. Play Affliction instead if you are not in a raid with dedicated support. Also, Destruction is weak in PvP because you have no self-healing and no mobility.
Sod Tank Warlock Build (Rune-Enabled)
Build Link
The sod tank warlock build uses a 0/51/0 split. Spend all 51 points in Demonology. Key picks: 5/5 Demonic Embrace, 5/5 Demonic Aegis, 1/1 Felguard, 3/3 Demonic Tactics, 5/5 Demonic Knowledge, and 5/5 Unholy Power. This tree gives you stamina, armor from spirit, and a permanent Felguard that holds threat. You cannot summon Felguard and lose your primary tanking tool unless you spend 51 points in Demonology.
Rune Pairing
The Meta Rune (chest slot) is mandatory. It transforms you into a demon, increasing armor, health, and threat generation. Slot Demonic Frenzy (legs) to increase your attack speed and generate more threat. Use Demonic Knowledge (shoulders) to convert your demon's health into spell damage for your Shadow spells. For the hands slot, use Felguard Tactics to boost your Felguard's threat generation. The build does not function as a tank unless you have these four Runes.
Failure Case
Do not try to tank without the Meta Rune. You will have no armor, no threat modifier, and you will die to the first trash pull. Also, tank warlocks have no taunt. You rely on damage threat from Felguard and your own spells. You cannot pull a mob back easily if it runs past you. This build is viable in dungeons up to level 55, but in raids you need a dedicated off-tank to handle adds.
Key Runes for Warlock in SoD
Chaos Bolt
Slot: hands. Effect: Instant Shadow bolt on a 6-second cooldown. This is the core rune for Affliction and Destruction builds. Your rotation has dead time without it. You get it from the Ashenvale PvP event or from a quest at level 40.
Meta
Slot: chest. Effect: Transform into a demon with increased armor, health, and threat. This is the tank warlock's only way to generate enough threat to hold aggro. You are not a tank without Meta.
Incinerate
Slot: hands. Effect: Converts Shadow Bolt to a fire spell and increases its damage. This is the Destruction build's primary damage rune. It requires you to gear for fire spell damage instead of shadow.
Demonic Knowledge
Slot: shoulders. Effect: Increases spell damage by a percentage of your demon's health. This rune scales with your demon's stamina, making it good for both tank and DPS builds. It is a dungeon drop from Blackfathom Deeps.
Mark of Chaos
Slot: shoulders. Effect: Increases the damage of Chaos Bolt. Pairs with Chaos Bolt to boost Affliction DPS. Obtained from the Blood Moon event in Stranglethorn Vale.
Common Mistakes with SoD Warlock Talents
The biggest error is using a Classic Era talent calculator that ignores Rune requirements. Classic Era builds assume you have no Chaos Bolt, no Meta, and no Incinerate. SoD Runes change which talents are worth taking. For example, in Classic Era, Affliction builds skip Improved Corruption because the talent only adds 10% damage. In SoD, with Chaos Bolt and Pandemic, that same talent becomes a 35% damage increase to your entire rotation.
Another mistake is ignoring the respec cost cap. SoD caps respecs at 50 gold, not the 5 gold cap from Classic Era. You waste gold if you respec every week to try different builds. Buy Dual Spec at level 40 for 50 gold and save one build for raiding and one for dungeons. Dual Spec allows you to swap between two saved builds outside combat in 5 seconds.
Finally, do not assume all Runes are easy to get. Some require group content. The Chaos Bolt rune requires the Ashenvale PvP event or a level 40 quest. The Meta rune drops from the final boss of Blackfathom Deeps. You may not have these Runes until you find a group if you are a solo player.
Common Questions
What is the best sod warlock build for leveling?
Affliction with 31/20/0. Start with 5/5 Improved Corruption, 5/5 Shadow Mastery, and 2/2 Grim Reach. At level 40, add Demonology for Demonic Embrace and Fel Stamina. Use Chaos Bolt and Summon Succubus Runes.
Can I tank as a warlock in SoD?
Yes, with a 0/51/0 Demonology build and the Meta Rune. Without Meta, you have no threat modifier and no armor. The build works in dungeons but lacks a taunt, so adds are hard to control.
What Runes do I need for Affliction DPS?
Chaos Bolt (hands), Summon Succubus (chest), Demonic Grace (legs), and Mark of Chaos (shoulders). Chaos Bolt fills downtime between DoT refreshes. The others boost pet survivability and debuff damage.
Is Destruction viable in SoD?
Yes, for single-target burst in raids. Use a 2/0/49 build with Incinerate and Decimation Runes. It runs out of mana fast and needs gear with hit rating. Play Affliction for sustained fights.
